...says Kapil Dev, captain of the last team that won India the world cup

Wankhede stadium came alive when India defeated the Sri Lankans to lift the World Cup. Amidst all the cheer and celebrations, there was one face people would have loved to see... that of Kapil Dev, the man who led India to victory in the 1983 World Cup. Past few weeks TV channels and newspapers have constantly flashed scenes of the 1983 win, reminding cricket lovers of the past glorious moment.

Kapil wasn't present at the big match and even though there have been whispers about how he should have been invited, the man himself would rather focus on the team's victory. "What matters is India's victory and I was so happy to see the boys lift the cup. My heart is always with the team. In fact, I cried tears of joy along with Harbhajan and Yuvraj," he says adding, "I had my prior commitments with a TV channel and so watched the match there along with Arjuna Ranatunga, Azharuddin, Madan Lal and others. But the last 40 minutes I chose to be alone so I could watch every ball."

Talking about the highs and the anxious moments in the game, Paji admits that he got worried when two champion batsmen got out. "But then Gautam and Virat managed it well. When Dhoni came out to bat before Yuvraj, I was very happy. It was the perfect decision. What we saw of Dhoni in this game, is what Dhoni is all about. And I'm happy for Sachin too that he has a world cup victory in his long list of achievements," he says.

Times have changed and for the better, says the former captain. Impressed with the current lot, he says, "The new generation is different. They are also more aggressive and I would give Sourav Ganguly the credit for that. He brought this kind of aggression into the team. Now Dhoni has channelised it so beautifully."

Has he personally wished any of the Team India members for their victory? "I'm quite a reserved person. I have offered all my wishes through news channels. But when I see the boys, I'm going to give them a tight hug. I'm very proud of them!"
