Why You Need Natural Medicine

World Health Day is on 7th April, 2011, and its theme is the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, or drug resistance.

We live in an era in which we depend on antibiotics, and other antimicrobial medicines to treat conditions that decades ago, or even a few years ago in the case of HIV/AIDS, would have proved fatal. When drug resistance occurs due to overuse or misuse of medications, it renders these medicines ineffective.

Luckily, within health and wellness circles, there has been a move towards natural and wholefood remedies as immune boosters. Emma Sutherland, expert naturopath on Lifestyle YOU TV show "Eat Yourself Sexy" and premier naturopath at the Golden Door Health Retreat, ascribes to this school of thought.

She recommends both herbal medicines as well as a healthy intake of zinc, Vitamin C and good bacteria to maintain a strong immune system. She confirms that these foods do not contribute towards drug resistance and with regular use, will protect your body from disease causing microbes (see press release attached).

One of Emma's favourite immune boosting remedies is:

Natural Immune booster

• Juice of 1 lemon
• 1 teaspoon of finely chopped fresh ginger
• Pinch of fresh chilli
• 1-2 cloves of finely chopped garlic
• 1-2 teaspoons Manuka honey

Add boiling water and cover for 10 minutes. Rug up, stay warm and enjoy two cups. This will encourage a mild fever and induce sweating. Fever is one of the first defences against infection and will help to relieve symptoms.
