Now the haircut, known as the "undone look" with its swept-forward fringe, has blown into what hairdressers are calling "Bieber fever".
Gold Coast hair stylist Megan Eddy said most young boys were opting for the "effortless" style, which fitted with their casual wardrobe.
"It came in a little before Justin Bieber and he has taken it to a new level. For a few years before he came along there was more of a flicked style developing," Ms Eddy said.
"He's tweaked it. I think with everyone now with their haircut, they tend to personalise it.
"Clients who want this style are between six and 26."
The Bieber cut is a straight style that is combed forward all the way around with the bangs directed in a side sweep.
But don't ask older blokes like Broadbeach chippie Jared Hamlet, 24, whether he opted for the haircut after seeing Bieber's long locks.
"Hell no. I've had this haircut for a few years. I live with three other tradies and they have similar hair. I have a big melon so it is okay," Jared told The Sunday Mail.
Coast make-up artist Joanne Leong said the hairstyle was perfect for young teens.
But like other recent hair trends like the Rihanna pixie cut, she predicts it will last only another six months, a shorter time than one of Jared's favourite cuts the Mullet.
